18 / 19th century Imperial Jiaqing vase
Description: Beautiful with totally perfect proportions and the correct imperial feel. The dragon is impeccably painted with the 5 claw dragon intended for the emperor, but in this case the imperial household. The palet is wucai underglaze blue with overglaze enamels and every cloud and each minutely crosshatched dragon scale is done over with gold gilding which has mostly worn away.It was probably intended for a lower ranking concubine and is structurally perfect but much of the gold and lighter enamels have worn off with use.
The white front glaze is pure and cold and the orange foot rim dates it to late Qianlong or definitely to the Jiaqing era (1796-1820). The bottom border is an absolutely perfect green waves and underglaze blue rock crashing waves at the ocean border. The dragons face is absolutely perfect without the single hair wispy at the end of the whisker and the body is long and serpent like so maybe it’s depicting a young female dragon. ( somebody suggestion to us ).
Iron red magic flames with gold still pretty nicely intact. Again, perfect comport fell and shape. It’s interesting to note the the cross-hatch and dot dragon scales that are done on this piece are superhumanly tiny with an overlapping gold dot on each one!! Cross hatch and dot scales didn’t make their appearance for the most part until circa 1870 and never on imperial porcelains.
